Sprockets

The most important factor about a sprocket is how many teeth it has. The proportion between the amount of teeth on front sprocket and your rear hub is called gear ratio. A common ratio is 25 to 9. Divided this is 2.78 gear ratio. The bigger this number gets the harder your gear will be. Older bikes sometimes still use 13 or 16 teeth in the back, means your sprocket has to be bigger then too. Most sprockets are attached to the crankarm with a small bolt. There are also sprockets with a special insert, so you can run them on a 48spline spindle (19mmm or 22mm) or the Odyssey socket system. Advantage is that you don't need the bolt for the crankarm and your sprocket sits more straight on the spindle. Good sprockets are CNC'd from quality alloy.
