Modern BMX cranks are multi pieced. Three-piece cranks have an axle (spindle) and the crankarms are attached from both sides. The more tooths the axle have the better the crank is. Cheaper cranks use 8 spline, while better cranks offer 48 spline. Besides three-piece cranks there are alo two-piece and two-and-a-half-piece cranksets. Either one crankarm is directly attached to the axle, or it is put on the axle from the backside. Both systems only use one single crankarm bolt to keep your cranks together. Another difference is the diameter of the axle. Most cranks use 19mm and 22mm, but nowdays more and more cranksets with a 24mm axle are available too. A thicker axle can be hollowed out and therefore will be lighter without loosing any strength. For the bearings you need to know the diameter of your axle and what kind of bottom bracket your frame has. Most common are MIdBB- and SpanishBB-sizes.
